Life and death through the eyes of Jes Brinch

Share this on Twitter Share this on Facebook Share this on Delicious Share this on Google Send this Event to a friend

A large marble sculpture, a ‘reality producing’ machine, will take a central position in Jes Brinch’s upcoming solo exhibition at V1 Gallery at Flæsketorvet in Copenhagen. In one end of the machine, raw material, such as senses, an infant, carrots, a draft beer, a cow and money, enter. The ingredients are mixed in the machine and in the other end, it spits out reality packages onto a conveyer belt – an image of our manmade reality.

This work will be central in the exhibition in more than one respect. Jes Brinch has spent his career challenging our notion of reality. His works serve as an invitation to be curious, to ask more questions as to what constitutes truth, and to look into the engine room in an attempt to figure out, who operates the ‘reality producing’ machine.

On the occasion of Life and Death a new monograph on Jes Brinch’s works will be published entitled ”Unlearn Reality”.

Opening night is on Friday 10 September 17:00 to 22:00, with summer grill, music and sunshine.

Jenny Grettve – Fashion, music and architecture

It’s quite rare to see fashion designers who are also architects, or vice versa. Jenny Grettve, 29, works in both fields but stands with yet another leg (a third?) in music and will release a music collaboration with artist Jesper A’bin this autumn.

The clothing brand JENNYGRETTVE has gained a lot of attention, with an independent style and a vibrant relation between the simple and the complex. The new Spring/Summer collection can be seen at Restaurang Smak at Malmö Konsthall on 2 September. Together with the fashion collection of Summer 2011, Jenny will also present a new chair designed in cooperation with Petter Sundkvist.

Recyclomat

When the music festival Øyafestivalen was held in Oslo earlier in August, the audience could make use of a specially designed recycling installation designed by two industrial design students from AHO; Carmen Bruno and Bo Wikstrøm.

In addition to the obvious function of being a waste bin, Recyclomat also makes use of new technology, interaction design and old-fashioned pinball aesthetics to create awareness and a commitment to sorting and recycling.

As you put waste in the various compartments, a red ball moves upwards until it finally takes a pinball-like round in the installation. The Recyclomat posts short messages on small diplays, like "Norwegians every year throws out more than 300,000 tons fully edible food. Eat up!" and "Congratulations! You help the buses forward!".

Biomega launches two new bicycles

Danish bicycle company Biomega has launched two striking city bikes for effective commuting in style, bringing the feel of something unique while moving through the cityscape.

‘LDN’ (detail + bottom) by Ross Lovegrove has a streamlined one-piece carbon fibre frame with a hole in it, allowing the bike to be wall-hung. It kind of brings back memories from the age of streamlined design, some ten years back.

‘NYC’ (top) was designed by Danish design collective KiBiSi. It has an aluminium frame with an integrated mudguard and carbon fibre belt drive instead of a traditional chain.

Both bicycles go on display at the Eurobike and Interbike shows in September, with LDN also on display at the SHOWHOW design exhibition in Tent London between 23 and 26 September.

The oversized sound installation Lydur by the New York based artist Timon Botez was custom built for DogA’s main hall. Come and watch it get fired off into an infinite composition based on the most precious element; time. The opening is on Tuesday 24 August at 19.00-21.00.

The installation consists of modified speaker equipped furniture, homemade crates, trumpet horns and a 3,5 meter tall wooden sound funnel. The music will be made through a mix of recorded natural sounds and synthetic sounds made by a computer program.

The World’s Greatest Catwalk

During the past Saturday some 100 000 people defied the rain and gathered in Copenhagen to witness the World’s longest outdoor catwalk, which marked the end of this year’s Copenhagen Fashion Week. The 1,6 kilometer long catwalk involved 220 models and 500 brands.

The project aimed to increase the visibility of Danish fashion brands abroad, using Copenhagen and the World’s Greatest Catwalk as a platform for extensive national and international coverage. But there was also a charity cause connected to the event. The World’s greatest catwalk supported the Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI), which helps the victims of the Chernobyl disaster back in 1986.
