If you put five different designer clothes in silhouette next to each other, it is very easy to spot a design from Matilda Wendelboe.
What makes her design and silhouettes so special are the collars, shapes and clever cutting solutions that make her design exiting and innovative.
I met Matilda at a fashion show in her boutique in Stockholm where she showed her autumn/winter collection.
Who is Matilda Wendelboe as a person/designer?
Fabric geek ! I´m crazy for fabrics, just like my Danish grand mother who also inspires me in my work. As a person and designer I´m very focused and intense.
How do you describe your style?
Hard to describe, but I´m trying to have a clear sculpted style. I have made my own clothes since I was five years old. I´m completely into and much a part of my design. The most important thing is that all my clothes should enhance and bring out the person who wears them.
What made you start your own brand?
Already as a child I decided that I would have my own company called Matilda Wendelboe.
It was during a period when I was playing with Lego… So when my parents retired from the family company, Saffran, where I worked, it felt like it was time to start my own company.
My mother is very easy to talk to and helps me in my work, she understands what I mean and she is a designer too.
Was there something special that you wanted to design, or something that you felt was missing in the fashion industry?
No, I don´t keep track on everything that goes on in the fashion industry, I just want to create my own special brand. I wanted to see what happened when you build a brand from the beginning without expectations and history, start out fresh from scratch.
How did you come up with the idea that your clothes should be able to transform?
I am very interested in construction and the idea to be able to make all my clothes fit well on the person who wears them. I really want to make clothes that can be used in different ways depending on what mood you are in.
Preferably you should be able to wear clothes for a long time, like "Slow Fashion" and if you can wear your clothes in different ways you won´t get tired of them so easy. Besides its perfect when you are travelling, you don´t have to pack as many items.
