Matilda Wendelboe

WRITER
Weronica Åström Löhr
If you put five different designer clothes in silhouette next to each other, it is very easy to spot a design from Matilda Wendelboe.
What makes her design and silhouettes so special are the collars, shapes and clever cutting solutions that make her design exiting and innovative.

I met Matilda at a fashion show in her boutique in Stockholm where she showed her autumn/winter collection.

Who is Matilda Wendelboe as a person/designer?
Fabric geek ! I´m crazy for fabrics, just like my Danish grand mother who also inspires me in my work. As a person and designer I´m very focused and intense.

How do you describe your style?
Hard to describe, but I´m trying to have a clear sculpted style. I have made my own clothes since I was five years old. I´m completely into and much a part of my design. The most important thing is that all my clothes should enhance and bring out the person who wears them.

What made you start your own brand?
Already as a child I decided that I would have my own company called Matilda Wendelboe.
It was during a period when I was playing with Lego… So when my parents retired from the family company, Saffran, where I worked, it felt like it was time to start my own company.

My mother is very easy to talk to and helps me in my work, she understands what I mean and she is a designer too.

Was there something special that you wanted to design, or something that you felt was missing in the fashion industry?
No, I don´t keep track on everything that goes on in the fashion industry, I just want to create my own special brand. I wanted to see what happened when you build a brand from the beginning without expectations and history, start out fresh from scratch.

How did you come up with the idea that your clothes should be able to transform?
I am very interested in construction and the idea to be able to make all my clothes fit well on the person who wears them. I really want to make clothes that can be used in different ways depending on what mood you are in.

Preferably you should be able to wear clothes for a long time, like "Slow Fashion" and if you can wear your clothes in different ways you won´t get tired of them so easy. Besides its perfect when you are travelling, you don´t have to pack as many items.

Have ecological fabrics always been your first choice?
Yes, for me it has always been my first choice to work with ecological fabrics. At Saffran (the family company) it was an aspiration, so you could say it runs in the family. I do what I can to work with ecological fabrics and now there is so much more to choose from like fabric made from bamboo.

Do you have any favorite fabric?
Wool! It is self cleaning, has different characters, looks and feels in so many ways. You can wear it all year round. Wool can be so thin and so rough, it is a very flexible and wonderful fabric.

If you had a choice to design a special outfit to someone, who would it be and why?
Difficult question, I´d rather not force anyone to wear my clothes. If people choose to come to me I love to help. I´m a good problem solver when it comes to customers who are unsure of what to wear or advise them about specially suitable cuts for them, but I prefer not to tell or give advice to anyone who hasn´t asked for my help.

Would you like to design someting else?
I have designed my house, I have actually designed several but in the future I want to build my own house after my own drawings. I would like to make furniture, I made a sofa and some coffee tables that I have in my home. Shoes would be a challenge and fantastic to design. Most things that are in need of shape are interesting.

Which designs are your favorites from your collections?
Spring collection: "Varvara", a shiny pantsuit made of ecological hemp. You can´t go wrong with that! I always feel nice and comfortable wearing it.

Autumn collection: "Paris/Tokyo", the jacket that you can wear whichever way you like. Upside down, inside out, it always looks great!

Hidden talent?
Greek crosswords. I´m fascinated by words and languages, I like to twist, turn and almost taste the words.

Matilda Wendelboe´s clothes are well tailored ladies wear that are both considerate and glamorous. Made from carefully chosen materials and with a perfect cut that brings out the best in women of all ages. Many of Matilda´s clothes are transformable. One dress can be used as two different dresses and as a skirt. The jacket, that Matilda mentioned, can be worn upside down and inside out... which is exciting and new thinking.

Matilda´s concept is based on using ecological materials and to manufacture all clothes nearby in Borås/Sweden. All clothes come in limited editions and some of them are even numbered.
